Write a step-by-step instruction, win a $200 gift certificate!

Thank you so much for your attention!!! But, the application was closed. Selection process is still ongoing. (12th, Aug update)

Here’s a contest for you!

We’re going to launch a new Grove Toy kit. It’s for you to hack or DIY your toys to fit with your own personality. We choose several components that are suitable to Toy spirit from our existing Grove category. Everything seems fine but we do need more real-world applications and step-by-step instructions to inspire the folks. So, here’s your chance.

Pack list of Toy kit:

1x Stem – Base Shield

1x Twig – I2C 3-axis Accelerometer

1x Twig – PIR Motion Sensor

1x Twig – Sound Sensor

1x Twig – I2C Touch Sensor

1x Twig – Buzzer

1x Twig – OLED Display 128*64

1x Twig – Chainable RGB LED

1x Twig – Vibrator

1x Twig – Sound Recorder

5x Grove – Universal 4 Pin cable

This isn’t a finalized part list, and we can modify some parts of it for you if your project rocks!

How it works:

Apply for this contest now with your initial idea of how you’re going to hack your toys with the Grove Toy kit. Each application will be checked by a real human, and then we will choose ten of them to go into the action phase. We will send out the Free Toy kit sample to each those ten entrants so that you can actualize your idea, and write down the step-by-step instruction. Demonstrate the result and send the instruction to us for evaluation. One grand prize winner will get a $200 gift certificate; two first prize winners will each receive a $100 gift certificate; three runner-up prize winners will each get a $50 gift certificate. Also, those instructions will be included in the product manual and their authors’ name will be printed on the contributor list. Of course, we will post the detailed information at every stage and make the process as clear as we can.

Requirements:

  • We don’t restrict the format of the application. Just make a clear plan of your toy-hacking project with our Toy kit, and show us your passions!

  • The necessary hands-on ability is required due to you have to actualize your project and demonstrate the results at the action phase. It would be helpful if you can provide external links to your previous open hardware projects in the application.

  • Your writing skill hasn’t to be excellent but please do make sure your can provide a step-by-step instruction that is readable and repeatable. It would be fantastic if there’re pictures and videos along with the literal description.
  • That’s great if you’re already familiar with Grove products, but it’s absolutely fine if you don’t. Grove is a very simple plug-and-play system, so you may take this chance and start having fun with it now!

Please send your application email to [email protected] before August 11th. We will get back to you asap. Note: This deadline is only for application phase. You would have around One Month after that to accomplish the whole contest.

Well its obvious you have never ever shopped at seeedstudios. they’re very reliable. Also, if you don’t buy a board because you say its cheaper, i have to say, for that $5-$10 you’re a real cheap-ass. Obviously prototyping works much faster if you have a board ready to start with. Don’t forget that the board already includes a lot that you are forgetting, like the usb connector, ftdi chip, fuses, resistors, headers, etc.

  3. @Jackson: Seeedstudio is one of the “secure” sites to buy worldwide 🙂 (I checked the support already)

About the constest I have one question, if I record some video for a toy hack, in which service can you view/receive the video? Youtube?

  4. Thanks for the reply, i will join if i have spare time, but i just recieved a new project last week, so hard to say right now.

I was looking at your store site and saw your “Fusion PCB Service” at $9.90 for 10 pcs, at 1st i wanted to buy a couple of PCB of my project prototype design, then at checkout i realised that it would cost an extra $3.22 for shipping which would take 2-3 weeks to arrive! i would sugest that you consider including free shipping of PCB into the price, and you will get more PCB orders.

    Just a suggestion,
Don’t you think it makes sense to include a “seeeduino” or similar in your “Free Toy kit sample” that you are going to send to the “10 action phase participants”?
what if they don’t have a “seeeduino” or “arduino” to connect your “stem sheild”?
Take me for example i have never bought any arduino boards or clones of them, even though i am well-versed in alll sorts of AVR programming, because the boards cost more than it takes to build the circuit i need from prototype materials ^_^
    Thanks

thanks for the suggestion. As mentioned, the pack list is modifiable if your project rocks. we’re expecting to see your talent:D

  6. Thanks @Jackson, let’s include a Seeeduino upon request. Glad you are willing to participate and help us out.

P.S. Welcome to risky China sites 😉
