Description
The RTC module is based on the clock chip DS1307, which supports the I2C protocol. It utilizes a Lithium cell battery (CR1225). The clock/calendar provides seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year. The end of the month date is automatically adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days, including corrections for leap years. The clock operates in either the 24-hour or 12-hour format with AM/PM indicator. And it is valid up to 2100. In order to gain a robust performance, you must put a 3-Volt CR1225 lithium cell in the battery-holder. The DS1307 has a built-in power sense circuit that detects power failures and automatically switches to the battery supply. If you use the primary power only, the module may not work normally, because the crystal may not oscillate.
What is an RTC (Real Time Clock), why do we need RTC for Arduino microcontroller?
An RTC (Real Time Clock) is a clock that keeps track of the current time and can be used to program actions at a specific time.Arduino and almost all microcontrollers have built-in timers that can run as long as there is power. However, as soon as the power is turned off (either manually or due to a power failure), all timers are reset to 0. It is acceptable to use the internal timer for timing simple projects if you don't mind the timer resetting to zero when the power is turned off. But for projects such as data loggers, clocks, alarms, where the timer needs to run independently of the external power supply, you need to use an RTC. Almost all RTCs are low power integrated ICs and can run for many years on a single lithium battery. At present, the RTC based on the DS1307 real-time clock is one of the most popular RTC modules.
We also offer a similar product: Grove – High Precision RTC, which provides a more accurate result and a programmable clock output for peripheral devices as well as a minute and half minute interrupt.
We have developed more than 400 Grove modules, covering a wide range of applications that can fulfill various needs. Click to explore the Grove Sensor family and get started to Grove your Idea.
