Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the latest product in the popular Raspberry Pi range of computers. It offers ground-breaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, memory, and connectivity compared to the prior-generation Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ while retaining backward compatibility and similar power consumption. For the end-user, Raspberry Pi 4 Model B provides desktop performance comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.

This product's key features include a high-performance 64-bit quad-core processor, dual-display support at resolutions up to 4K via a pair of micro-HDMI ports, hardware video decode at up to 4Kp60, up to 4GB of RAM, dual-band 2.4/5.0 GHz wireless LAN, Bluetooth 5.0, Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0, and PoE capability (via a separate PoE HAT add-on).

The dual-band wireless LAN and Bluetooth have modular compliance certification, allowing the board to be designed into end products with significantly reduced compliance testing, improving both cost and time to market.

Utilizing the same computing power of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, Broadcom BCM2711 processor, Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 is also available now at Seeed. There is dual HDMI, PCIe, Onboard Gigabit Ethernet, and eMMC that comes with the Compute Module 4 has optional onboard eMMC of 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB, starting from $25. Compute Module 4 is smaller in shape and suitable for integration into products.

More than just educational

The Raspberry Pi people push their line of SBC (single board computers) as educational. They are that but much more. CanaKitt lets you build a complete up and running Pi 4 system with powerful work-a-day programs like LibreOffice, needing only a screen (I use a spare TV with HDMI), a keyboard (I had several lying around) and a mouse (less than $7.00). The snap together kit, expertly packaged by CanaKit, rivals out of the box desktops costing much more. Take it eith you in a bag with a roll up Keyboard and 7" monitor and you have the equivalent of an expensive laptop PC.

Works well as an appliance

What you get is a desktop computer that isn't a desktop computer. It has a fully functional (Claws) e-mail client, a fully functional (Chromium) browser and a fully functionally desktop Libre Suite that uses about 15 watts. It's under four inches long by two and a half inches wide and one inch high. I'm guessing it would be great for a 20 foot shipping container home with off'-grid solar. It's got lots of developer tools and lost of games included. lots of GUI settings in Preferences. It's got WiFi, Bluetooth, and Gigabit Ethernet (That can all ge turned off or unplugged at will.)

Nice computer

This is an absolutely amazing system. I was able to get this running in a matter of minutes. The performance is really good. I set up SMB and Node on this and it works really well as a server.

This can almost be a replacement for an entire desktop. It’s sufficient enough for browsing the web and checking email.
