Consider the scale. A mid-size palm oil plantation might cover 5,000 to 20,000 hectares. A timber plantation can exceed 50,000 hectares. And for a truck driving on a paved highway between towns, that works. On a plantation, it is an expensive workaround that creates more problems than it solves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Cellular-Only Tracking Has Limitations on Plantations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cellular coverage does not follow work: <\/strong>Plantation blocks are often located far from public cellular infrastructure. A 4G signal may exist at the main office and the mill, but vanish once a harvester drives two kilometres into a palm block or a tapper walks into a remote rubber stand. At 500 devices, that is 500 recurring monthly subscriptions. A handful of gateways with a single backhaul connection serve thousands of tags.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you combine LoRaWAN&#8217;s long-range backhaul with short-range Bluetooth beacons for zone-level positioning and GNSS for open-sky coordinates, you get a system that covers the entire plantation \u2014 including the blocks where cellular has never reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The principle is simple: <strong>use low-power networking for the many, and reserve high-power connectivity for the few.<\/strong> A plantation may need one or two cellular-connected gateways for backhaul.
