These strengths made LoRa useful for sensors, trackers, meters, and other low-data-rate devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeedstudio.feishu.cn\/space\/api\/box\/stream\/download\/asynccode\/?code=MjIwNjc0NWY4MjA5OTliYTc2NTg4YmZjNmVhYmJhNDRfc1V2UHQzdHFzSlJlaFdTNHJpVFVUbzJaMHR4RFRwYkRfVG9rZW46WWFNR2JINUhrb2dYRVl4c25LR2NqNmpLblZmXzE3ODk1NDg3MDE6MTc4OTU1MjMwMV9WNA&amp;add_watermark=true&amp;scene_type=CCM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But IoT devices are changing. A modern field device may need to do more than send a small sensor packet every few minutes. It may need to support richer applications. This creates a new challenge. <strong>Can a long-range, low-power radio also provide enough data capability for more interactive devices?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semtech.com\/products\/wireless-rf\/lora-plus\/lr2021\">Semtech&#8217;s LR2021<\/a> offers one possible answer. With multiple radio modes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/Seeed-Studio-Wio-LR2021-Wireless-module-868-915MHz-Tape-reel-p-6831.html\">LR2021<\/a> expands the communication options available to developers. <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.seeedstudio.com\/meshtracker_x1_node\/\">SenseCAP MeshTracker X1<\/a> is an example of what this new radio architecture can look like in a real LR2021-based <a href=\"https:\/\/meshtastic.org\/\">Meshtastic(\u00ae)<\/a> device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From a Single-Purpose LoRa Link to a More Flexible Radio Data Path<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional LoRa communication is very good at moving small amounts of data over long distances. But not every application has the same data requirements. Consider three examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Telemetry:<\/strong> A sensor needs to send a few bytes data via a long range.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Position tracking:<\/strong> A tracker may send GNSS coordinates at regular intervals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Interactive communication:<\/strong> A user may send messages and expect a quick response.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeedstudio.feishu.cn\/space\/api\/box\/stream\/download\/asynccode\/?code=MmRkZDVhMzBmZTY3YTM5NDBlN2RkOGZhNzdiZjg4YjJfRXpyeTUwNllQZWd5RWNleVNraldJdG1KWlo0aFlpYlJfVG9rZW46Skw1cGI2M2Vxb2hIVVd4YThxQ2N0YXJnbmljXzE3ODk1NDg3MDE6MTc4OTU1MjMwMV9WNA&amp;add_watermark=true&amp;scene_type=CCM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These applications have different requirements. The radio therefore needs to balance <strong>range, data rate, airtime, power, responsiveness.<\/strong> A higher data rate can reduce the time needed to transmit suitable payloads. That can reduce airtime. In a mesh network, this can become important because forwarded packets also consume network resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A modern field device may need GNSS position updates, text messages, more frequent communication, potentially richer data in future applications in a same device. This is where radio architecture starts to matter. The next generation of LoRa devices does not only need to go farther. It also needs to provide <strong>more communication flexibility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeedstudio.feishu.cn\/space\/api\/box\/stream\/download\/asynccode\/?code=ZGJjYzdlMGIzNGViODYyZjRkMDU2YTZjNzE2Y2Q5MmFfQ2RDakY3SE5PRFA4THZwM1JqYWZic2tLclFCMEljeHZfVG9rZW46S25xQ2J1VzF4b28wOW54RHNWU2NZdUtSblRmXzE3ODk1NDg3MDE6MTc4OTU1MjMwMV9WNA&amp;add_watermark=true&amp;scene_type=CCM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LR2021 is interesting in this context because it combines conventional LoRa communication with additional radio modes. Its <strong>FLRC modem supports data rates up to 2.6 Mbps<\/strong>. This does not automatically turn every LoRa device into a high-speed communication device. Instead, it gives developers more room to design different communication behaviors. Instead of relying on only one modulation behavior, LR2021 supports multiple radio modes. Its supported modulation options include LoRa, FLRC, FSK, OOK, O-QPSK and LR-FHSS .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FLRC is particularly relevant when higher data rates are needed. It supports raw bit rates from 260 kbps to 2.6 Mbps, depending on the selected configuration. This creates an important design possibility. <strong>Different payloads do not necessarily need the same radio behavior.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MeshTracker X1 combines these requirements in a small battery-powered device. The hardware uses the LR2021 transceiver, with LoRa sensitivity specified up to -141 dBm and FLRC data rates up to 2.6 Mbps. This gives the product a broader radio capability envelope. But there is an important technical boundary. LR2021 chip provides hardware capabilities. It does not define the entire application. <strong>LR2021 supports FLRC.<\/strong> That does not mean <strong>every<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.seeedstudio.com\/meshtastic_introduction\/\">Mesh packet<\/a><\/strong> <strong>automatically uses FLRC.<\/strong> Actual behavior depends on Firmware, Protocol implementation, Radio configuration and regional requirements. <strong>LR2021 defines what the hardware can support.<\/strong> The firmware decides how those capabilities are used.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeedstudio.feishu.cn\/space\/api\/box\/stream\/download\/asynccode\/?code=NDM3MmVjMWY5YzcxY2ZkNDQ4ZTY4ZWJhN2ZhMjc1NDRfelp3bXNheU9Kc3o3V0lkVUV3Ym1EeXY1U2l5Sm1yVmpfVG9rZW46SU1rT2Jkc2o2bzdGdm54b2NwNWNDNVhFbk9iXzE3ODk1NDg3MDE6MTc4OTU1MjMwMV9WNA&amp;add_watermark=true&amp;scene_type=CCM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Higher radio capability does not mean a mesh network should simply send more data. Mesh networks have a special constraint. A packet can travel through multiple nodes. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeedstudio.feishu.cn\/space\/api\/box\/stream\/download\/asynccode\/?code=YzNiODk5YmYxYjY5NjMyMjAxOTA0ZjI1MWJjNWQwMjlfUE56STZIM1hNbHI0TE4wam5CVVBLSUFLZUZPcFZRbmpfVG9rZW46VHZtbmI5QXVrb0ZTb0x4QzM2a2NRZHBEbm9lXzE3ODk1NDg3MDE6MTc4OTU1MjMwMV9WNA&amp;add_watermark=true&amp;scene_type=CCM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same packet may consume airtime at several points in the network. This creates a relationship between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Radio capability \u2192 Airtime \u2192 Mesh<\/strong> <strong>forwarding<\/strong> <strong>\u2192 Network scalability<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeedstudio.feishu.cn\/space\/api\/box\/stream\/download\/asynccode\/?code=OWE5ZThiZjA5MDMxOTk5NGY0NDE2ZjBiMjljNzY3MzJfVlFsMkgyRWVIa0hYZDJta2ZHbUdVVXNFZU0xa1lMbGNfVG9rZW46UGhSR2JoZ2Fab1dVOXd4dERKNWNORlFqbmtlXzE3ODk1NDg3MDE6MTc4OTU1MjMwMV9WNA&amp;add_watermark=true&amp;scene_type=CCM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If payload size increases, airtime can also increase. If transmission frequency increases, the network can become busier. Forwarding nodes also consume power. Therefore, higher PHY capability does not remove the need for good network design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeedstudio.feishu.cn\/space\/api\/box\/stream\/download\/asynccode\/?code=ZTQwYzRjODVmZGZiMmEzNDVmMDMzZTU3NmYzYWIwMjdfVGRKR2lhOHNQazdDbEFHR0V0dzIxTHZOUmpXWDh0RUNfVG9rZW46THFCTmJOejZFb24wNFV4RFhCdGNiMEhabklhXzE3ODk1NDg3MDE6MTc4OTU1MjMwMV9WNA&amp;add_watermark=true&amp;scene_type=CCM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developers still need to consider packet priority, update intervals, payload size, forwarding behavior and battery consumption. This is especially important for portable devices such as MeshTracker X1. The goal is not to send everything as fast as possible. And device like MeshTracker X1 provide the capability is to <strong>use the right communication behavior for the right task<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where LR2021 Can Matter Beyond the Conventional Tracker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happens when mesh devices need to exchange more than short text or telemetry? This is where higher-speed radio modes become interesting. LR2021 FLRC creates technical headroom for applications that need more data. Possible directions include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Larger data payloads<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Richer messages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Future voice applications<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Future<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.semtech.com\/fast-long-range-communication-semtech-lr2021-enables-high-speed-image-transfer-without-compromise\">image-oriented applications<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seeedstudio.feishu.cn\/space\/api\/box\/stream\/download\/asynccode\/?code=ZDE4YzNiZGNjNzI0M2RkODg1NDY2NzlkZjFmZjhjYzNfV3ZDV1hzTDcwTkR1V0o2NHIxeDBkWjFzdDlaRUVtUU5fVG9rZW46SVJYZGJ2cmYwb1pXYW54eGVmWWNUZTl3bm1KXzE3ODk1NDg3MDE6MTc4OTU1MjMwMV9WNA&amp;add_watermark=true&amp;scene_type=CCM\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is an important distinction. The LR2021 is a foundation for future features such as voice and image transmission. The hardware creates possibilities. The software decides which possibilities become real features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What MeshTracker X1 Demonstrates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/sensecap-meshtracker-x1-meshtastic-gps-tracker-p-6935.html\">MeshTracker X1<\/a> shows what this direction looks like in a real endpoint. X1 combines this with a compact, battery-powered form factor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Higher data-rate headroom:<\/strong> FLRC can reach up to 2.6 Mbps, giving the X1 substantially more throughput headroom than conventional LoRa device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shorter airtime for suitable payloads:<\/strong> A given payload can potentially be transmitted in less airtime on X1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>More room for future applications:<\/strong> Higher-speed radio capability creates technical headroom for richer data applications on X1: image transfer and other higher-throughput use cases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The value of LR2021 is therefore not simply that it makes X1 \u201cfaster.\u201d It gives the platform <strong>more room to match radio behavior to different communication requirements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LoRa has always been known for two things: long range and low power.
