More than 1,000 students signed up. 40 teams made the final cut. And on September 11, they arrived at MACE with one thing in common: working hardware, not slideshows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the whole idea behind EVOKE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What EVOKE is<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

EVOKE 2026 is the flagship technical project expo and competition of the MACE IoT Club, held at Mar Athanasius College of Engineering, Kothamangalam. Seeed Studio came on board to support it. Its rule is refreshingly strict: no mockups, no concept decks. Instead, every team builds a real prototype, demonstrates it live, and defends it in front of industry judges and mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The projects span everything from embedded systems to AI-powered solutions, and from healthcare devices to smart-city prototypes. In short, EVOKE exists to push engineering that actually works in the real world. This year it drew over 1,000 registrations from colleges across India. From that pool, the judges shortlisted 40 teams to showcase at MACE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The build-up: three pre-events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

EVOKE did not begin on Expo Day. It built up over weeks of pre-events designed to teach, challenge, and warm up the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI Signage Workshop.<\/strong> This two-day, hands-on workshop covered TinyML and interactive signage. Its goal was to launch students into Seeed Studio’s Make a Sign Interactive Signage Contest. Along the way, participants worked with the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense, the Grove Vision AI V2, ePaper displays, and SenseCraft. By the end, they were ready to build their own smart signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EvoQuest.<\/strong> This fast-paced quiz put students’ knowledge of technology, electronics, and innovation to the test. As a result, it brought out the competitive spark and pulled the wider student community in well before Expo Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venture.<\/strong> This 16-hour hardware hackathon ran on the theme Sustain, Shield, and Accelerate. Teams of two to four went from a blank table to a working IoT prototype in a single overnight sprint. Meanwhile, they competed across the challenge tracks for cash and grants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six tracks, two of them brand new<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every EVOKE project had to answer one directive: create something real. This year the challenge tracks expanded from four to six, with two fresh additions opening the field to even more kinds of builders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Food Security & Future Agriculture:<\/strong> precision farming, automation, smart storage, and soil-health networks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Climate Resilience & Disaster Preparedness:<\/strong> flood monitoring, early-warning systems, and rescue technology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Electric Mobility & Clean Infrastructure:<\/strong> battery management, EV safety, smart charging, and intelligent traffic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Smart Infrastructure & Industrial Safety:<\/strong> structural health monitoring, predictive maintenance, and worker safety.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. AI, Robotics & Autonomous Systems<\/strong> : intelligent machines that perceive, decide, and act using AI, robotics, computer vision, and embedded systems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Assistive Technology & Smart Healthcare<\/strong> : affordable technology for accessibility, healthcare, rehabilitation, patient monitoring, and independent living.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Expo Day: September 11<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Expo Day was where all of it came together. The 40 shortlisted teams set up their prototypes across the venue. Then, for the rest of the day, they demonstrated, explained, and defended their work to a steady stream of judges, mentors, and curious visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The energy on the floor was exactly what you hope for at a hardware expo. Soldering irons were still warm, laptops sat open next to running prototypes, and students talked through their design choices with real conviction. These were not posters about what could be built. Instead, they were devices you could watch working, right there on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The projects that stood out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    When the judging wrapped, the top projects showed just how much is possible in a single build cycle. The winning entry was a real-time predictive-maintenance system for industrial machinery. It uses optical and electrical sensing to track lubricant health on the factory floor. Better still, it warns teams before a breakdown happens. The runners-up were just as practical. One was an ultra-low-cost, fully offline healthcare hub for rural frontline workers, with needle-free screening and digital record-keeping. Another was an edge-AI water-quality monitor that checks community water sources for contamination on the spot. Across the six tracks, other teams took on climate resilience, interactive signage, and industrial safety. Each one paired a real sensor stack with on-device intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Why it matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Events like EVOKE do something a classroom cannot. They give students a deadline, a real audience, and permission to build something that might fail. As a result, ideas turn into working hardware, and students turn into makers. More than a thousand young engineers rallied around that idea, and 40 teams carried it all the way to a live demo. For me, that is a clear reminder of how much talent is ready when you hand people the right tools and a real challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
