From October 4–6, 2026, the global open science hardware community gathered in Lalitpur, Nepal, for the GOSH 2026 Gathering. Hosted by Karkhana Samuha, the three-day event brought together researchers, engineers, educators, and makers to exchange ideas, experiment with hardware, and explore how open technologies can make scientific tools more accessible.

Seeed Studio was proud to support the gathering through sponsorship and hardware contributions, helping create more opportunities for community members to learn, collaborate, and build together.

Why Open Science Hardware Matters

Scientific tools should not be limited to well-funded laboratories or specialized institutions. Open science hardware makes it possible for more people to build, adapt, repair, and share the tools they need to investigate the world around them.

This is what makes the GOSH community special. Rather than focusing solely on finished products or formal presentations, the gathering creates space for people to share work in progress, learn from one another, and experiment with ideas that may develop into new tools, research methods, or community-led projects.

Across the three days, participants explored topics ranging from water testing and soil health monitoring to homemade solar cells, disaster shelter construction, and accessible hardware. The diversity of sessions reflected a shared belief: scientific innovation becomes more inclusive when the knowledge and tools behind it are open to more people.

From AI-Assisted Coding to Creative Making

In the Vibe Coding with Wio Terminals session, participants explored the intersection of AI-assisted coding and embedded hardware.

By bringing AI-assisted software development into a hands-on hardware setting, the workshop offered a way to experiment with ideas and explore how code can interact with physical devices. It also reflected a broader shift in prototyping: AI tools can help lower some of the barriers between having an idea and beginning to build it.

The goal is not to replace the process of learning or engineering, but to give more people a starting point for experimentation—and a way to turn curiosity into something tangible.

               ""

The Creative Hat-Making workshop walked participants through the journey from prototype to mass production. In under 30 minutes, each team designed a paper hat, wrote its manufacturing document so a stranger could reproduce it, pitched the design to the group, and then replicated the chosen hat following that document—with the original creator acting as quality control.

Through this compressed mini-manufacturing cycle, participants experienced the core workflow behind taking hardware to scale: prototyping, writing the manufacturing documentation, gaining buy-in, and verifying quality before production. The debrief mapped these paper-hat steps onto real electronics manufacturing—from engineering verification and BOMs to pilot verification and mass production—showing that the discipline of moving from an idea to a reproducible product is central to open hardware.

Seeed also shared its perspective on open hardware during the sponsor presentation, Everything Is Talking: From Doraemon’s Translation Jelly to the Open Datalogger. The Open Datalogger is an open hardware product Seeed has invested in developing for interspecies research and ecological monitoring, with field testing already underway with partners around the world. Explore our Interspecies Initiative here.

The initiative centered around a practical challenge: how can we build tools that help us observe, collect, and understand information from the non-speaking world around us?

The idea extends beyond any single application. Open and adaptable hardware can help communities develop tools suited to their own needs, while making it easier to share designs, exchange knowledge, and build on previous work.

At Seeed, we believe that enabling innovation means more than making technology available. It also means helping people explore what is possible with it—and giving them the flexibility to shape it around the challenges they understand best.
