LCD screen had died some years back. For a casing like the GBC, that&#8217;s not ideal, since the mic should be somewhere near your mouth and speaker somewhere near your ear. First job is to remove the speaker and make the wires a lot longer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-14375 alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/4-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"4\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/4-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/4-773x1030.jpg 773w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/4.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s more like it. Longer wires.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"post-image-title font-opensans-semibold\" data-reactid=\".3.0:$ibYaU8B.0\">Planning the board<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-14376 alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/5-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"5\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/5-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/5-773x1030.jpg 773w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/5.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gameboys are like a sandwich &#8211; PCB as the meat between the casing, all the components go onto the PCB, and the case holds it in place. I wanted to replicate this idea for the phone &#8211; so there&#8217;s no components that are connected to the case itself. This means that when I have to open it up to do maintenance, it&#8217;s easy to access and fix. I&#8217;m marking the screw hole positions here so it can all fit together.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"post-image-title font-opensans-semibold\" data-reactid=\".3.0:$CeV0ZHc.0\">Touchscreen<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14377 alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/6-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"6\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/6-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/6-773x1030.jpg 773w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/6.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Touchscreen in place on the top board &#8211; secured with rivets from the phone kit. Lots of work here to make sure the board cleared all the internal structures in the case &#8211; and I wanted to retain the Gameboy look as much as possible (including buttons and switches).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"post-image-title font-opensans-semibold\" data-reactid=\".3.0:$JXCPQwu.0\">Back of the screen module<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-14378 alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/7-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"7\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/7-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/7-773x1030.jpg 773w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/7.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not entirely flat, so I cut out the board to make space for everything to sit flush on the board.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"post-image-title font-opensans-semibold\" data-reactid=\".3.0:$m1Qv90U.0\">Screen in place<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"post-image-title font-opensans-semibold\" data-reactid=\".3.0:$m1Qv90U.0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-14379 alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/8-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"8\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/8-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/8-773x1030.jpg 773w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/8.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the screen in place in the casing. You can see the small flexible connectors below the board that need to clip into the GSM and Audio modules. Connectors are so short (about 1&#8243;), there&#8217;s not really much flexibility in layout. Kinda wish the Kickstarter had supplied different cable lengths or made the elements easier to relocate.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"post-image-title font-opensans-semibold\" data-reactid=\".3.0:$tqtfFF0.0\">Cutaway cartridge<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-14380 alignnone\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"9\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9-773x1030.jpg 773w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/9.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Needed extra space in the upper back of the case, so a fake Pokemon cartridge gave it&#8217;s life. Would have preferred to have a micro-usb female connector here, but it&#8217;s impossible to find.
