Are my boards double sided or single sided? Is it through-hole or surface mounted? Can you have through hole and surface mount components on the same board? This entry clears up any misunderstanding.<\/p>\n<h2>14.1 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/fusion_pcb.html\">PCBA<\/a> Constructions<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Single Sided (SMT) Mounting<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15990 aligncenter\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Single-Sided-SMT-Mounting.jpg\" alt=\"Single Sided (SMT) Mounting\" width=\"435\" height=\"64\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Single-Sided-SMT-Mounting.jpg 435w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Single-Sided-SMT-Mounting-300x44.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/>Surface mounted components only on one side of the boards, or component side. Since there are no through hole components, these boards don&#8217;t need drill holes and the copper pads and solder mask are only needed on one side. The latter point is the same with single sided through hole (TH) boards, except the pads are needed on the opposite side of the board, also referred to as the solder side.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Single Sided Mixed (SMT and THT) Mounting<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15991 aligncenter\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Single-Sided-Mixed-SMT-and-THT-Mounting.jpg\" alt=\"Single Sided Mixed (SMT and THT) Mounting\" width=\"394\" height=\"69\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Single-Sided-Mixed-SMT-and-THT-Mounting.jpg 394w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Single-Sided-Mixed-SMT-and-THT-Mounting-300x53.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><br \/>\nBoth through hole and surface mount component bodies on the component side. Although, called single sided, the PCB board itself needs to be double sided since the through-hole pads need to be on the solder side, the opposite side to the component bodies.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Double Sided (SMT) Mounting<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15992 aligncenter\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Double-Sided-SMT-Mounting.jpg\" alt=\"Double Sided (SMT) Mounting\" width=\"417\" height=\"74\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Double-Sided-SMT-Mounting.jpg 417w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Double-Sided-SMT-Mounting-300x53.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Simple and compact, double sided SMT boards utilise both sides to make the most of the available area and enable strict form factors to be met. This construction is similar to single sided mixed mounting except the spaces between the long component leads on the solder side are also utilized to maximise SMT real estate. For mass production, wave soldering is required to solder both SMD and THT components.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, that was useful and helped clear up a few misconceptions.
