Lidar has become much more famous with the development of self-driving cars. However, compared to autonomous driving, Lidar may seem more suitable for general robotics applications, as in: less precise requirements, lower cost, and minor errors allowed\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our previous blog about <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/09\/rplidar-and-ros-the-best-way-to-learn-robot-and-slam\/\">combining ROS programming with RPLIDAR<\/a>, which shows how to build a powerful robot and learn SLAM by ROS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we want to talk more about how <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/lidar\">Lidar<\/a> helps in research in robot automation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1030\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.seeedstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/11-1030x175.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20019\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/11-1030x175.gif 1030w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/11-300x51.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/11-768x131.gif 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1030px) 100vw, 1030px\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/lidar\">LIDAR &amp; Rangerfinders<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lidar can help the robot understand the surrounding topography of an unknown environment, provide good environmental cognition for subsequent positioning, navigation <g class=\"gr_ gr_27 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"27\" data-gr-id=\"27\">and<\/g> even human-computer interaction, and overall increase robot intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The integration of a laser scanner and Lidar solves an important intelligence problem in robotics: by giving the robot a pair of \u201ceyes.&#8221; Through Lidar, the robot can emit infrared light to the outside world, map its location via triangulation or the Time of Flight (ToF) imaging principle, then construct high-precision contour information of the environment to assist the robot in executing its mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By observing the combination of Lidar and robotics, we found that the size, cost <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">and<\/g> performance of Lidar are ideal for robots. In the past, radars employing triangulation techniques had difficulty achieving a range of more than 20 meters. We believe the distance measurement range will be even longer in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(2) Measurement frequency<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Higher scanning frequencies enable the robot to achieves faster motion and increases the quality of the map construction. Now, the radars in the market are able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/RPLiDAR-A3M1-360-Degree-Laser-Scanner-Kit-25M-Range-p-3080.html\">achieve 16000 readings per second<\/a>, and even higher frequencies can be achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"618\" height=\"486\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.seeedstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/16000sec.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19972\"\/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/RPLiDAR-A3M1-360-Degree-Laser-Scanner-Kit-25M-Range-p-3080.html\">RPLIDAR A3<\/a> improves the internal optical design and algorithm system to increase the sample rate to up to 16000 times, which is much better than most competitors.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(3) Detection of black and white objects<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At present, the laser radar&#8217;s nominal distance is mostly based on <g class=\"gr_ gr_29 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"29\" data-gr-id=\"29\">light<\/g> from a diffuse reflection object (such as white paper) with a 90% reflectivity. However, Lidar has been able to achieve stable detection of black objects of around a radius of 10 meters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(4) Both indoor and outdoor use<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the ability to detect dark objects, it is especially important that Lidar and laser scanners can work under the influence of various types of ambient light. By breaking through the visual limit of the triangle ranging, upgrading the processing algorithm and with optical adjustment, the traditional triangular ranging laser radar can easily achieve stable operation under typical outdoor daylight conditions (70KLux).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The higher the accuracy requirement, the greater the cost of the laser scanner and Lidar. But the Lidar used for service robots does not need to achieve the same accuracy as the radars used for self-driving vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a<g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">fter<\/g> solving the above technical and cost problems, does it mean that laser radar can only be used on robots?
