(Advantages and Benefits)<\/li><li>Limitations of PoE<\/li><li>How to use PoE with the Raspberry Pi? <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is PoE?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To put it simply, power over ethernet is a technology that allows network cables to carry electric power over one Cat5e \/ Cat6 ethernet cable. <\/li><li>This means that you are able to power a device over a single network cable. <\/li><li>For example, when connecting ethernet and power to your Raspberry Pi, you will normally require 2 connections: <ul><li>Power connection (To power the Raspberry Pi)<\/li><li>Network connection (To be able to connect to local area network)<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.seeedstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-49.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27828\" width=\"491\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-49.png 839w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-49-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-49-768x380.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>However, with PoE, only a network connection for the above function is needed using an ethernet cable as it is able to receive power from the cable as well.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.seeedstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-50.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27829\" width=\"460\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-50.png 794w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-50-300x138.png 300w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-50-768x352.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Other common uses of PoE include VoIP phones, wireless access points, IP cameras, smart clocks, industrial controls, security access controls and many more!  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#e00d0d\" class=\"has-text-color\"><strong>Since we are using the same cable, will it affect data speed and bandwidth by using PoE?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The answer is <strong>NO!<\/strong> PoE operates independently of the signaling with no relationship. It has no effect on the data so you wouldn&#8217;t lose bandwidth by using PoE<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why use PoE? (Advantages and Benefits)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Using PoE can bring many advantages including: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Save time and cost<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>With PoE, you can reduce the time and cost used to install new power lines. <\/li><li>Network cables do not need a qualified electrician to install it and it can be located anywhere. <\/li><li>Compared to traditional wiring, PoE installation are also much cheaper. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flexible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>PoE allows you to mount devices in awkward or remote locations where it would be impractical to install power.<\/li><li>Furthermore, PoE can be easily moved around and reconnected. It is like plug and play where an entire network doesn&#8217;t have to be dismantled if you wish to move it around.<\/li><li>With PoE, it is great if you wish to install wireless access points or CCTV cameras.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Safety<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>PoE delivery intelligent where it is designed to protect network equipment from overload, underpowering or incorrect installation.<\/li><li>In addition, PoE voltages are around 15W to 90W where conduits and metal cladding are not required. PoE can be easily set up using a Cat5e or Cat6 ethernet cable without the need of an electrician.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Centralized Control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>As PoE power comes from a central and universally compatible source, you can manage power to devices from a centralized switch. <\/li><li>It can also be backed up by an uninterruptible power supply. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Limitations of PoE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When using PoE, there are some limitations to take note of: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Transmission Distance<\/li><li>Device Compatibility<\/li><li>Power Delivery Rates<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transmission Distance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum distance of PoE can transmit 100 meters from the switch or hub regardless of where the power is injected due to the ethernet cabling standards. PoE devices supply power according to the device IEEE 802.3 generation where the life-cycle generation is indicated by the extension: \u201caf,\u201d \u201cat\u201d or PoE+, and \u201cbt\u201d or \u201cUPoE\u201d. Here is the following power budget per device for each PoE type: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>IEEE 802.3af<\/strong>  = 15.4W<\/li><li><strong>PoE+<\/strong> = 30.8W<\/li><li><strong>UPoE<\/strong> = 60W<\/li><li><strong>IEEE 802.3bt<\/strong> = 90 to 95W<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to use PoE HAT with the Raspberry Pi? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/Raspberry-Pi-PoE-HAT-p-3115.html\">Raspberry Pi PoE HAT<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.seeedstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-51.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27830\" width=\"342\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-51.png 512w, https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-51-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Raspberry Pi Power over Ethernet HAT is a small accessory for the Raspberry Pi computer.
