And here it comes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Face recognition is a very important (and a very controversial) field of Computer Vision, that gained a lot of traction in recent years, thanks to advancements in Deep Learning. Now it is possible to recognize a person\u2019s face among millions of others, just from a digital picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.nlark.com\/yuque\/0\/2021\/jpeg\/2523686\/1610531333262-01254ebd-fbdd-4ba9-b870-2ec71efc4bf7.jpeg?x-oss-process=image%2Fresize%2Cw_746\" alt=\"education-337CRPX.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.seeedstudio.com\/Make-A-Robot-Kit-p-4669.html\">M.A.R.K<\/a> had image recognition and object detection functions from the first version. We then added <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.tinkergen.com\/2020\/06\/01\/mark-on-device-model-training-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"local training (opens in a new tab)\">local training<\/a>, custom user models as new features through OTA updates. But face recognition function was missing. The reason for that is face recognition is actually very complicated and involves using not one and not even two, but three model pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> The first model detects faces<\/li><li> The second model detects face landmarks, such as eyes, nose and mouth corners. Detected faces then aligned to a standardized positions using these landmarks.  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.nlark.com\/yuque\/0\/2021\/png\/2523686\/1610531378960-d3906635-d7f8-4939-9c5c-33216346d07f.png\" alt=\"WXWorkCapture_16099263644791.png\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Finally, the third model extracts so-called feature vectors from images of the faces. Feature vector is a string of numbers, that contains encoded information about face structure. The face recognition models are trained in that way, so feature vectors for similar faces are \u201cclose\u201d to each other and for different faces are \u201cfar\u201d from each other. We use Euclidean distance for distance calculation between different vectors. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.nlark.com\/yuque\/0\/2021\/png\/2523686\/1610531388522-a4a89ea6-159e-40f8-a144-d3acf2c5f587.png\" alt=\"386b67aab4c55af17c761dc4c1e75dc.png\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> The last step is to compare feature vector from a face that is currently detected in camera image to vectors in the database \u2013 and if distance is lower then preset threshold (called similarity in user interface of Codecraft), then we conclude it is the same face! <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The beauty of M.A.R.K is in simplicity though. First and foremost M.A.R.K is a robot for STEM education, so it is important that teachers and parents can demonstrate Machine Learning and Computer Vision concepts without going too much into complicated code. When uploading the code, please <strong>do not<\/strong> unplug the data cable or restart MARK!
