SOLVED: first get a driver for PL2303 -- match your OSX versionhttp://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?p_id=229&pcid=41then on command line, define port AND programmer AND device — for atmega 328p (var in arduino — no boot loader)avrdude -c avrispv2 -P /dev/cu.usbserial -p m328p

UPDATE: above will recognize a chip but not allow programming. for avrdude command line use -c stk500 instead -- I can only use default baud rate -- others lead to timeouts and hangs.

Is it possible to use this programmer in Windows 7 x64?
It worked in Windows XP, and it's working in Linux (using avrdude), but it's completely not working in Windows 7, because of problems with drivers for PL-2303HX chip.

Concerning the post below, I am now sure there is no problem with PL-2303 drivers. They are installed successfully from the latest version available at http://prolificusa.com/pl-2303...

<p>Thank you for answering, but not matter COM you choose, it is impossible to establish connection. BTW, driver is working correctly, therefore I insist that the device is not recognized as a STK500 compatible. So there is no way to use it with AVRStudio
