Description
Grove - Infrared Reflective Sensor v1.2 can be used for the detection of proximity and color of objects. The reflective photosensor - RPR-220 used in this module consists of an infrared light emitting diode and a high –sensitivity phototransistor. Light-colored objects directly in front of the sensor will reflect more infrared light as well as generate more current in the phototransistor than an object with dark-colored surfaces, this can tell from a built-in indicator LED which will turn red with sufficient flow of current. Also, the intensity of the reflective light increases as the object getting closer. You can adjust the potential-meter on the back of the board if you want to detect a specific object (eg. Blackline) at a certain distance.
Application
This sensor is widely used in applications such as:
- Line-following robots
- Rotary speed detection
- Auto-data logging on utility meters or other situations where color or distance contrast is sharp.

What is the difference between the IR distance sensor and the ultrasonic distance sensor?
IR distance sensor |
Ultrasonic Sensor |
|
What it does | Measure distance through reflected light waves |
Measure distance through reflected sound waves |
How it measures | Triangulation: Angle of a reflected IR beam is measured | Time taken between transmitting and receiving sound waves are recorded |
Human Relationship | Invisible to the naked eye | Unhearable |
Object Requirements | Suitable to be used to measure complex objects | Not suitable to measure objects with complex surfaces |
What is Grove?
Grove makes it easier to connect, experiment, and simplify the prototyping process. No jumpers or soldering required. We have developed more than 300 Grove modules, covering a wide range of applications that can fulfill a variety of needs. Not only are these open hardware, but we also have open-source software.
