SeeedStudio BeagleBone Green (BBG) is a joint effort by BeagleBoard.org and Seeed Studio. BBG is based on the open-source hardware design of BeagleBone Black and developed into the differentiated version.  There are on-board two Grove connectors, making it easier to connect to the large family of Grove sensors for a quick and a wider range of prototyping. The on-board HDMI is removed to make room for Grove connectors.

(Jason Kridner, founder of the BeagleBoard.org, announced Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green at Bay Area Maker Faire, the latest version has removed the battery backed up Real Time Clock (RTC).)

One of Seeed Studio's motto is “Grow the Difference”, which has now become part of the culture of the company. This is not just reflected from what we are doing in popularizing open source culture, but also from our products. Ever since the company funded, we are continuously creating our own open platform to differentiate from the existing one such as Seeeduino vs Arduino. This time we would like to introduce a new member of those unique products----Seeed Studio Beaglebone® Green.

Description

Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green is a joint effort between BeagleBone.org® and Seeed Studio, and it is based on the open-source hardware design of BeagleBone® Black.

Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green is a low-cost option that provides the compact footprint, numerous interfaces, and expandability of BeagleBone® Black while extending the development environment with on-board Grove connectors which work with the Seeed Grove ecosystem. Furthermore, Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green is fully compatible with BeagleBone® Black capes.

Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green comes with a Debian image installed on the on-board 4GB 8-bit eMMC flash storage. You can connect the board to a 5V power supply or the USB port of your PC to easily power it up.

The main change is replacing the HDMI interface with 2 Grove connectors. Grove is a great invention by Seeed, it is a modular standardized connector prototyping system by which you are able to build applications without soldering and jump wires.

With the rapid development of the grove system, more and more sensors, actuators, displays are joining the grove family, all of them are integrated with the standard Grove connector so that you can connect the Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green to them with a simple cable. So far we have produced more than 30 Groves that work well with Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green, and the number is increasing. Apart from that, we also changed the 5V barrel to be a micro USB host, so that you can power the board more conveniently.

101020013 Grove - RTC is not compatible with Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green as it requires 5V.

Fully compatible with BeagleBone® Black

Despite the changes we made, Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green is still fully compatible with BeagleBone® Black and applied with all the BeagleBone® Black capes. Even though Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green has all these advantages, we did not increase the price, actually, the price of Seeed Studio BeagleBone® Green is much cheaper, it may be the most low-cost BeagleBone® in history. What we want is to provide a BeagleBone® that is not only more powerful and easy-to-use but also reachable to most people.     The hardware is excellent so far. Seeed Studios has limited ability to support this board, but has tried to answer questions or to redirect to another source. There are numerous sources on line that are relevant to the BBB or BBGw.

    This board, with WiFi on and answering a continuous PING from a network laptop, was powered for 3 hours by an unplugged 2600 mAh phone battery extender. It was still operating when the test was ended.

    Great BeagleBone, but have a USB-tty handy.
    This is a fantastic headless beaglebone.

    It is a bit of a pain to set up if you're not using it as an access point. Since there is no ethernet, nor display, the serial over usb functionality comes in handy. However, this functionality is somewhat limited & I'd recommend having a USB to 3.3v TTY adapter or FTDI handy to interact directly with the terminal, images, and debugging.

    Fantastic addition for your Beaglebone regardless if you have a Grove device or not.
    Fantastic addition for your Beaglebone. I am not using any Grove devices but I picked this up simply for the connectors. Grab a bundle of the Seeedstudio Grove - Universal 4 Pin Buckled 20cm Cables and snip off one end to be connected to whatever. Makes connecting projects and really any device to the Beaglebone so much easier. Has a built in voltage selector so you can choose between 5V and 3.3V logic without having to use a converter. No library needed to use it, just plug and play.
