World Meteorological Day 2024: At the Frontline of Climate Action

World Meteorological Day serves as a reminder of our responsibility to safeguard our planet. Through innovation and collaboration, we can harness the power of technology and build a sustainable tomorrow.
This is the second episode of our #IoTtoWild blog series.

Every year on March 23rd, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) celebrates World Meteorological Day to commemorate the establishment of the organization in 1950. This day serves as a reminder of the crucial role that meteorology and weather-related sciences play in our daily lives, as well as the significant impact they have on global issues like climate change and sustainability.
For World Meteorological Day 2024, the theme is “At the Frontline of Climate Action.” This theme highlights the pivotal role of meteorological and climate science in addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change and emphasizes the importance of collective action to mitigate its impacts.

Understanding the Urgency

Climate change impacts every aspect of our lives, from food security and water resources to public health and biodiversity. It exacerbates natural disasters, such as hurricanes, floods, and wildfires, and affects vulnerable populations, including low-income communities and marginalized groups. Meteorological and climate science play a crucial role in monitoring and studying these changes, providing valuable insights into the drivers and impacts of climate change. By understanding the underlying mechanisms of climate change, we can develop effective strategies to mitigate its impacts and adapt to a changing climate.

Harnessing Technology: Environmental Monitoring and Data Collection

In the pursuit of climate action, technology emerges as a powerful ally, enabling us to monitor, analyze, and respond to environmental changes effectively. One of the key areas where technology can make a significant impact in climate action is through environmental monitoring and data collection. Accurate and reliable data on weather patterns, air quality, soil moisture, and other environmental parameters are essential for understanding the dynamics of climate change and developing effective mitigation strategies.
At Seeed Studio, we offer a range of environmental monitoring solutions that enable users to collect real-time data on various environmental parameters. Let’s take the Liberia Rainforest Carbon Sequestration Monitoring Project as an example:

To better monitor and measure climate data, CO2, and other Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) to support Climate Research in rainforests in Liberia, the Forestry Training Institute (FTI) in Liberia has collaborated with Seeed Studio, One Planet Education Network (OPEN) and the University of Maryland. They have deployed a testbed of three SenseCAP S2103 LoRaWAN CO2, Temperature, and Humidity Sensors and one SenseCAP S2120 LoRaWAN 8-in-1 Weather Station to measure greenhouse gas emissions around the campus of FTI in Bomi, Tubmanburg, Liberia. All the data collected by the sensor nodes are sent to the cloud via the Helium LoRaWAN network via SenseCAP M1 LoRaWAN Gateways.

This project addresses the UN’s SDGs climate challenges by aiming to collect real-time data on CO2 and GHGs while educating future forestry professionals enrolled in the FTI education program with a living laboratory real-world field study. Exemplifying a commitment to global climate action, SenseCAP sensors provide crucial insights supporting environmental conservation research and sustainable practices in rainforest ecosystems.
