World Environment Day 2024: Seeed Studio’s Innovative Efforts for Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on June 5th to raise awareness and encourage action to protect the environment. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and held annually since 1973, it has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach.

The theme for 2024 is land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience, and the event will take place in Saudi Arabia on June 5th. The event will focus on living sustainably in harmony with nature, and topics will include:
Recycling, Air quality, Food waste, Plastic bag bans, Renewable energy, Greener products, Plastic pollution, Sustainability, Watersheds, and Endangered/protected species.

Why "land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience "

Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is deeply invested in delivering solutions. It is acting nationally and regionally through the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative. It is acting globally, as we saw when the Saudi presidency of the G20 resulted in the adoption of the Global Land Restoration Initiative.

Over the years, Seeed Studio has proudly supported projects and initiatives with positive social and environmental impact. We firmly believe that open technology is a major tool to help solve many of the world’s problems today and achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • SenseCAP LoRaWAN Devices Deployed to Monitor Carbon Sequestration in Liberia’s Rainforest

The Forestry Training Institute (FTI) of Bomi County, Liberia has partnered with OPEN and the University of Maryland’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences to deploy a network of greenhouse gas monitoring sensors and weather stations in a rainforest outdoor laboratory adjacent to the main FTI campus grounds. This initiative addresses the UN’s SDGs climate challenges by aiming to collect real-time data on CO2 and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) while educating future forestry professionals enrolled in the FTI education program with a living laboratory real-world field study. Exemplifying a commitment to global climate action, SenseCAP sensors provide crucial insights supporting environmental conservation research and sustainable practices in rainforest ecosystems.

  • Computer Vision for Zoo Management: Learning from Animals’ Life Patterns to Enhance Welfare

The proposed solution uses advanced computer vision AI models on the powerful NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano to enhance zoo management by accurately identifying and tracking animals within their enclosures, eliminating observer bias, and capturing detailed behavioral data. Integrating LSTM-based RNNs, the system analyzes sequential data to recognize abnormal behavior by detecting deviations from learned patterns. This continuous monitoring provides a comprehensive understanding of animal behavior, enabling prompt interventions for anomalies and tailoring enrichment activities to individual preferences, ultimately optimizing habitat design to nurture the well-being and natural behaviors of the zoo’s residents

  • Cherry Tomato Plantation with SenseCAP LoRaWAN: Smart Farming at Greenhouse for SDGs in the Netherlands

The event was jointly organized by Wageningen University & Research (WUR) and Tencent, with the goal of finding the best intelligent planting solution of cherry tomatoes, remote control of greenhouse crop production, and the best net profit optimization strategies in an autonomous greenhouse via deploying AI algorithms and sensors.
