What Is a PCBA Test Fixture? How It Works and When You Need One

A PCBA test fixture is a customized tool that holds the board in a fixed position and connects it to the required test points, interfaces, or programming contacts.

It helps make repeated Functional Test (FCT) faster, more consistent, and easier to scale — especially for complex boards and batch production.

When Do You Need a Custom Test Fixture?

Not every PCBA needs a test fixture.

Manual testing works well for prototypes and small quantities, while a custom fixture provides a more repeatable and efficient process for complex boards and production testing.

👇 A simple way to think about it is

* Note: If you plan to use a custom test fixture later, consider testing access during PCB design. Accessible test points, sufficient spacing, and reachable programming interfaces can make fixture development much easier.

How Does a PCBA Test Fixture Work?

Workflow: Load PCBA → Connect → Test → PASS / FAIL → Remove & Repeat

The PCBA is placed into the fixture, where pogo pins or other contacts connect to predefined test points and interfaces. The test system then runs the required test sequence and returns a clear PASS / FAIL result.

Once testing is complete, the board is removed and the same process is repeated for the next PCBA.

How to Get a Custom Test Fixture with Seeed Fusion

To customize a test fixture, our engineers first need to understand both the PCBA design and how the product is expected to work.

What to Prepare

Please provide:

  • Gerber files
  • Schematic files
  • Product requirements / PRD
  • Test requirements, including what needs to be tested and PASS / FAIL criteria

These files help our engineers identify test points, interfaces, programming requirements, and the functions that need to be covered by the fixture.

📌 For Testing Only, please also provide clear product photos so our engineers can review the board structure, connector positions, and fixture accessibility.

How to Get a Quote and Start Testing

New Fixture, Existing Fixture, or No Fixture?

For Functional Test, the fixture option depends on your project.

  • No Test Fixture Needed — For simple tests that can be completed without dedicated fixture hardware.
  • Need a New Custom Test Fixture — Recommended for complex PCBAs or repeated batch testing. Seeed Fusion will evaluate and develop a fixture based on your board and test requirements.
  • Use an Existing Test Fixture — If we have already developed a compatible fixture for your previous order, it can be reused without another custom fixture fee. Please provide the previous order number or fixture ID for engineering review.

Custom test fixtures are charged as a one-time customization fee and retained by Seeed Fusion for 12 months.
