A Seeed Fusion customer told us that he had met a new problem recently: He saw an interesting project and was keen to try it. In that tutorial, they built a LoRa transceiver to transmit humidity data using a STM32F103C Blue Pill development board with a LR1276 LoRa module that uses the SX1276 IC. Although it is an really interesting project with many capabilities, the large size makes it unsuitable for small LoRa transceivers and the availability of STM chips is a concern worldwide.

Thus, we provided a new solution to our client, Seeed LoRa-E5. LoRa-E5 uses STM32WL devices, the world’s first LoRa® system-on-chips. The module is based on STMWLE5JC which uses the same SEMTECH LoRa radio, and with the ARM Cortex-M4 MCU on the same chip, it is possible to directly combine STM32 processing power and LoRa connectivity into one smaller footprint. Not only did this reduce the footprint drastically, the LoRa-E5 solution saved the customer over half the cost and improved performance, memory and reduced power usage, perfect for long-term LoRa projects. In the current chip shortage crisis, the customer was also relieved to find that LoRa-E5 is in good supply and at low-cost, and decided to take advantage of LoRa-E5 for other wireless STM based projects.
