Meet ESP-FLY: Tiny, Hackable ESP Drone That’s Easy to Start

Huge shoutout to @Max for this incredible Co-create project! Powered by the XIAO ESP32-S3, the ESP-FLY is a palm-sized, fully programmable quadcopter for every maker.

If you’ve ever tried to build and fly your own drone, you already know how this story goes. You may start with a traditional commercial drone — stable, polished, but ultimately a closed ecosystem with very limited room for customization or experimentation.

Or you can move toward more open DIY approaches, such as self-built multirotors based on open-source flight control systems like ArduPilot or PX4 — offering flexibility, stability, and full system-level control. However, this approach comes with trade-offs: increased system complexity, higher cost, larger form factors, and less convenience for rapid prototyping and everyday experimentation.

Or you go all-in on compact FPV builds — relatively low in cost, highly customizable and exciting, but demanding in almost every way: complex assembly, constant tuning, endless debugging, and long hours practicing flight control in simulators with an actual controller in hand just to stay airborne… and even then, the cycle of crashing, repairing, and rebuilding never really stops.

For many makers and beginners, the hardest part isn’t building or flying — it’s surviving the gap between the two. Max also noticed this gap early on, and in May last year, he shared the ESP-FLY project with the community,  which we’ve been co-creating with him since its early stages.

This is exactly the gap the ESP-FLY DIY Kit was designed to close.

ESP-FLY DIY Kit (Insert Product page link) is a pocket-sized, micro drone based on XIAO ESP32-S3, designed for developers, makers, and beginners — making it easier than ever to start building, coding, and flying in minutes instead of weeks.

It brings together DIY flexibility, development freedom, and the thrill of actual flight — without the heavy setup, steep learning curve, or fragmented toolchains.

⚙️ Built for Developers: ESP-FLY is designed around the ESP ecosystem, making it easy to integrate with familiar development workflows. Whether you are working with firmware logic, control algorithms, or experimental features, it lowers the barrier between software and physical flight.

🔓 Hackable by Design: From soldering to firmware flashing, ESP-FLY gives you a full hands-on build experience. It’s an open platform designed for experimentation and learning.

🚀 Rapid Prototyping Platform: Instead of spending weeks assembling and tuning hardware, ESP-FLY lets you focus on iteration. It is built for fast testing of ideas — from control behavior to interaction concepts.

🎮 Flexible Control Modes: ESP-FLY supports multiple ways to fly. Beginners can control it directly via a mobile phone without any FPV setup, while advanced users can switch to a traditional FPV controller and goggles for a full first-person flight experience.

✈️ Anywhere, Anytime Flight: So small it fits in your shirt pocket, ESP-FLY is always ready to fly. You can easily carry it with you and take off whenever inspiration strikes — even indoors, without needing an open field or worrying about surrounding space. It finally makes flying something you can do anywhere, safely and freely.

That is why ESP-FLY Matters!

ESP-FLY is not just about flying.

It is about removing friction between idea and reality — making drone development accessible, fast, and enjoyable again. Where building, coding, and flying become part of a single continuous loop.

FAQ

  1. Do I need any drone flying experience to use ESP-FLY?

No. ESP-FLY is designed to be beginner-friendly. You can start with mobile control and gradually explore more advanced modes as you learn. Perfect for first-time builders.

2. What can I modify in ESP-FLY?

You can modify both software and hardware aspects of ESP-FLY — including firmware behavior, flight logic, and hardware assembly during the build process. It is designed as an open platform for experimentation and learning.

3. What makes ESP-FLY different from other mini drones?

Unlike typical mini drones, ESP-FLY is not just for flying — it is a hackable development platform designed for coding, experimentation, and learning.
