Project Nightchrome: Building Automotive Multi-Sensor Fusion with reComputer Robotics J4012

“Project Nightchrome” is an innovative, multi-device sensor fusion platform designed to redefine automotive safety. Built around the reComputer Robotics J4012, this project demonstrates how edge AI and precise timing synchronization can create a smarter, safer driving environment.

📋 Project Overview

The goal of Project Nightchrome is “diversity array” of two kinds of LED (high-CRI and low-CRI) so that the car can adapt its lighting to road conditions at 2000Hz, stop shining light on roadside signs that might dazzle driver at night, and automatically disable lights that would blind oncoming drivers.

Key Objectives:

  • Adaptive Lighting: Replacing standard headlights with a “diversity array” capable of adapting to road conditions at 2000Hz.
  • Anti-Glare Technology: Automatically disabling specific light segments to prevent blinding oncoming drivers or reflecting off roadside signs.

⚙️ Technical Architecture

This application leverages a powerful combination of heterogeneous computing and precise time synchronization.

1. The Core Compute: reComputer Robotics J4012 with GMSL (Jetson Orin NX 16G)

The reComputer J4012 serves as the central brain of the operation. It handles the heavy lifting for RGB camera processing and orchestrates the sensor fusion logic. Its GMSL capabilities allow for robust connectivity with automotive-grade sensors.

2. Neuromorphic Vision: BrainChip Akida

To handle high-speed visual data efficiently, the system utilizes the BrainChip Akida AKD1000 (installed in the E-key slot). This neuromorphic processor is specifically tasked with processing data from event cameras, allowing for ultra-low latency reaction times that traditional frame-based cameras cannot match.

3. Precision Timing: PTP Grandmaster & FPGA Accurate sensor fusion requires perfect synchronization.

  • Time Source: A Multi-band GNSS/GPS receiver provides a Stratum 1 feed for a PTP (Precision Time Protocol) Grandmaster.
  • Synchronization: A Lattice CrossLink-NX FPGA acts as the hardware timestamping unit. It uniformly timestamps all sensor feeds (Radar, LiDAR, Camera) using the PTP time, ensuring that data from disparate sources aligns perfectly in the software layer.

4. Audio Processing & Noise Cancellation

  • Hardware: Infineon analog MEMS microphones paired with a Renesas AnalogPAK (SLG47004).
  • Function: The AnalogPAK is configured to filter out road and wind noise from the raw microphone data. This clean signal allows the system to reliably detect emergency vehicle sirens even at highway speeds, triggering alerts for the driver.

💡 Key Innovations & Value Proposition

FeatureBenefit
Dynamic Headlight ControlBy utilizing High-CRI and Low-CRI LEDs behind projector/diffuser lenses, the car illuminates the road without dazzling other drivers, significantly improving night safety.
Heterogeneous ComputingOffloading event-based vision to the BrainChip Akida frees up the Jetson Orin NX to focus on complex path planning and RGB processing, maximizing system efficiency.
Hardware TimestampingUsing the FPGA for PTP timestamping eliminates software jitter, ensuring that the “picture” of the world built by the AI is spatially and temporally accurate.
