Recap: Azure IoT Solution Application & Practice Seminar in Shenzhen

On Dec 17th, we organized an Azure IoT Solution Application & Practice Seminar together with Microsoft Greater China Team at Chaihuo x.factory.

Digitization has become an inevitable trend among which IoT technology plays a huge role in accelerating the digital transformation. How to apply IoT solutions to various vertical sectors has attracted close attention from global developers.

On the Azure IoT Solution Application & Practice Seminar on December 17, more than 50 developers gathered to explore topics like Microsoft’s Azure IoT, Azure Stack HCI, Azure IoT Plug and Play, and Azure IoT Edge. All the participants were guided to build up 2 prototypes for smart agriculture and smart office scenarios in the hands-on session.

The seminar is a joint effort by the Microsoft Greater China Team and Seeed, taking place at Chaihuo x.factory (a maker space owned by Seeed). There were several highlights that I’d like to share with you:

🎙️Morning Session: Let’s Deep Dive into Azure IoT

The seminar included two sessions with 4 keynote sharing in the morning. We’re honored to have two IoT experts from Microsoft walked us through the Azure IoT. Wendy Wen, the Senior IoT Solution Expert at Microsoft shared the IoT ecosystem built by Microsoft, and how Microsoft enables enterprises to achieve their goal of digital transformation.

Wendy’s speech was followed by an insightful sharing on“Azure IoT and Azure Stack HCI” by Tim Zhan, IoT Cloud Solution Architect at Microsoft. Tim showed the role that IoT solutions play in connecting the cloud to the edge. He also talked about Azure Digital Twin, a platform as a service (PaaS), and its applications in the sectors o manufacturing, energy, healthcare, retail, transportation, and logistics.

Later on, Seeed’s IoT Account Manager Betty Fan shared on How Azure IoT Plug and Play Digitalize the Agriculture with several success cases of smart agriculture including FarmBeats and more. Robin Liu, Product Manager at Seeed, was also one of the speakers for the morning session. Themed as Azure IoT Edge & reTerminal’s Applications in IoT, Robin detailed in the difference between cloud computing and edge computing, and emphasized how Azure IoT Edge leveraged the development and deployment of IoT solutions.

🤖️Afternoon Session: Get the Hands Dirty and Build up IoT Prototypes

For the afternoon hands-on session, our Application Engineer Huiying Lai guided the participants to get started with Wio Terminal, and 4 Grove sensors and how to connect these edge devices and sensors to the Azure IoT. After setting up hardware, connecting sensors, and data collecting, the participants were divided into groups and teamed up to build two prototypes in smart agriculture and smart office scenarios.

At 18:00 after a group photo, we called it a wrap! We’ve received a lot of valuable feedback from the participants:

“Amazing workshop by Seeed Studio and Microsoft using the Azure Cloud to implement IoT Solitons. Thanks for inviting me to participate.”

“A bit addicted to IoT. Using different platforms to build up an IoT system is never this easy. Huge thanks to Seeed and Microsoft for organizing the workshop.”

“Before entering the era of Metaverse, we still need to focus on things like IoT, food and more.”
