We Listen and Take Action #6: More Radar Sensors for Building Care Alert Solutions for Family

We got one very impressive feedback from our Wishing Well which shows the need for more smart home sensors in order to build a smart home solution for his/her grandma.

We are really touched by this. Indeed, the miracle of smart home solutions has made life easier for many people, especially seniors.  Seeed is glad to help provide more smart home devices offer peace of mind for family members and caregivers providing assistance to elderly individuals.

First, we focus on falls detection. Falls are the major cause of accidents in the elderly population. In a real-life scenario, they have the potential to mitigate some of the adverse consequences of a fall. Specifically, fall detectors can have a direct impact on the reduction in the fear of falling and the rapid provision of assistance after a fall.

Therefore, we released 24GHz mmWave Fall Detection Module

The other important aspect is the time the elderly remain lying on the floor after falling (long lie). This time is one of the key factors that determine the severity of a fall. Many older fallers are unable to get up again without assistance.  This is particularly critical if the person lives alone or loses consciousness after falling. They found that the long lie is a marker of weakness, illness, and social isolation and is associated with high mortality rates among the elderly. More than 20% of patients admitted to hospital because of a fall had been on the ground for an hour or more, and even if there was no direct injury from the fall, their morbidity rates within 6 months were very high. Robust fall detectors may have the potential to diminish this long lie.

So, we offer 24GHz mmWave Human Static Presence Module. Compared to the traditional PIR sensor, the Human Static Presence Module has more sensitivity to human activities like standing, moving, and falling. And because the transmitting wave is millimeter-level, it will remain functioning even shelter block. Not like the PIR sensor short responding, the module keeps sensing people continuously which makes it quite useful during the living room, hotel, or even prison.

We also know that getting quality sleep is important for every person to get better physical health. Irregular sleep patterns may indicate the illness resulting in chronic depression, which makes the evaluation of the sleep cycle mandatory for a healthy body and mind. So we introduce Respiratory Sleep Radar Sensor(MR24BSD1) and Breathing and Heartbeat Module(MR60BHA1).

24GHz mmWave Sleep Breathing Monitoring Module

This radar module provides a fully total private and secure sensing environment, independently from other noisy influences. It is a useful privacy-protected, secure sensor radar system in smart home applications like sleep safety alarms, and sleep respiratory detection.

60GHz mmWave Breathing and Heartbeat Module

The MR60BHA1 60GHz radar module applies FMCW detected theory to implement simultaneous personal breathing rate and heart rate detention in high accuracy, providing a fully total private and secure environment, independently from other noisy influences. It is a standard biotic radar system in consumer electronics, healthcare as well as industrial applications.

We care about every little detail when it comes to providing better products and services for our customers. If you think there are other sensors you want Seeed to provide, just let us know on Wishing Well. We check the wishing well every day and will get back to your feedback quickly. Your suggestion could lead to improvements that benefit everyone.

  1. This paragraph:
“So, we offer 24GHz mmWave Human Static Presence Module. And because the transmitting wave is millimeter-level, it will remain functioning even shelter block. Not like the PIR sensor short responding, the module keeps sensing people continuously which makes it quite useful during the living room, hotel, or even prison.”

    contains a few errors:

    1. “it will remain functioning even shelter block.” makes no sense. I guess it is trying to say the signal isn’t blocked by a human body? But I am *not* certain.

    2. “Not like the PIR sensor short responding” makes little sense. I guess it is trying to say a PIR only responds briefly (when the person is moving), whereas the ’24GHz mmWave Human Static Presence Module’ continues to sense the person?

    3. “useful during the living room, hotel, or even prison.” ‘during’ is very confusing. I guess, maybe:
“useful in people’s home rooms, hotels, or even prisons.”
    or
“useful for detecting people living in rooms at home, hotels, or even prisons.”
or maybe something else. I am unsure.

  2. I’ve come here from Seeed’s recent (7th April) emailed Newsletter, “IoT into the Wild”.

The first sensor shown in that Newsletter, “SenseCAP S1000 10-in-1 Compact Weather Sensor with CO2 Measurement” is ‘Out of Stock’. Maybe add a date when it went out of stock?

It seems a bit incompetent having a ‘Buy Now’ button in the Newsletter if it was out of stock before the Newsletter was sent out.

I was about to forward a copy of the newsletter when I stopped to check availability. I have no idea whether or not my friend would buy one. However, sending a link to an ‘Out of Stock’ item looks a bit ‘weak’. At least saying when it went out of stock is somewhat helpful.

Ideally Seeed would also publish an estimate of stock lead time, like for example Mouser. It is even useful to know if the supplier has made no commitment. Then the next best offer of information might be emailing interested (potential) customers with an “Estimated Time of Arrival” once the supplier makes a high confidence agreement.

    Best Wishes as always.
